JOB TITLE: NOLS Pacific Northwest Director
REPORTS TO: NOLS Director of Operations
JOB OBJECTIVE: Directs all aspects of NOLS Pacific Northwest (PNW) operations in accord with NOLS vision and strategic goals. The NOLS Pacific Northwest director will oversee operations for NOLS PNW and another U.S. location. Acts as the NOLS representative in all aspects of campus operation and program implementation, from legal, financial, and human resources concerns, to land management and community relationships, program supervision and course operational support. Works with the local government agencies and organizations to advance the NOLS mission in the Pacific Northwest Seattle-Vancouver corridor.
QUALIFICATIONS: A commitment to NOLS' mission and values as a learning organization is essential. This position requires excellent communication skills, a fascination with creative problem-solving and experience building positive leadership environments that embody equity and inclusion for diverse teams. Experience in staff supervision and budgets management is needed. Requires a dedication to public relations and vision for expanding the reach of the school’s mission regionally. Must be able to work independently and lead location, while remote accessing schoolwide resources and Operations team. Interest in working in a collaborative fashion with other NOLS directors is important.
LEADERSHIP OR SUPERVISORY DUTIES: Develop and execute vision and strategic goals for PNW campuses. Oversee all aspects of NOLS PNW program implementation including, risk management, curriculum, budget, public policy, building projects and career planning. Hires, trains, and creates structure to develop a career path in-town staff.
FUNDS AND/OR PROPERTY: Responsible building and managing spending for locations under their supervision (Pacific Northwest and another U.S. location). Manages U.S. and Canadian accounts. Responsible for asset planning and care in NOLS PNW properties including land, buildings, vehicles, and inventories.
This is an approximate division and is flexible depending on location demands.
70% Location Leadership and Management
- Plan operational activities including support staff structure, logistics, program scheduling, content and curriculum, course mix, long-term budgets, and other operational goals.
- Participate in development and location-targeted implementation for strategic goals.
- Hire, train, supervise, develop, and evaluate support staff. Create an inclusive and welcoming environment.
- Ensure a rewarding experience for students by providing accurate information in advance, outstanding student service, welcoming atmosphere, quality program, and incorporation of student feedback.
- Assure high quality staff service including thorough briefings and debriefings, providing accurate information in advance, exceptional field staff supervision, and review of staff feedback.
- Risk management oversight, including field safety reports and evacuation supervision.
- Work with student discipline and separations including intervention and family contact.
- Oversee research of all route areas, including obtaining and maintaining necessary permits.
- Plan and supervise acquisition, maintenance, and safety of campus, vehicles, equipment, and supplies.
- Foster a creative and flexible approach to addressing unpredictable enrollment trends, and show willingness to explore new programming.
- Strive to make NOLS PNW locations fun, dynamic, and fulfilling places to work.
- Assure compliance with laws and business procedures.
- Physical plant planning, construction, and maintenance oversight.
- Assure adequate supervision of on-site construction projects.
15% Public Relations
- Represent NOLS to the public, including the local community, government officials, and other business contacts.
- Supervise in community relations priorities and orient local staff to develop and maintain best possible relations with government agencies, partnering organizations, and other important national and regional stakeholders.
- Develop business regional business opportunities for PNW’s Washington campus.
- Act to protect and advance our wilderness classroom access.
10% School-wide Leadership
- Build and maintain relations with other NOLS departments, locations, and headquarters.
- Participate as part of a school director and operations team to exchange knowledge, support, and enhance the school’s overall program and mission.
- Advance and gather input for school-wide leadership initiatives at the local level. Acts as a representative of operations to audiences beyond the NOLS PNW locations.
- Communicate NOLS vision and state of the school to staff.
- Keep school directors abreast of changes in the business environment that affect PNW locations.
- Perform special projects and duties as assigned by the NOLS Operations leadership.

WORK LOCATION: This position is based at the NOLS campus located in Mount Vernon, Washington. On-campus housing and food staples available for a small fee, if desired.
