Explore the Untamed Patagonia Mountains

Over 14 intense days, you’ll journey through the stunning landscapes of Patagonia, hiking across glacier-studded peaks, dense temperate rainforests, and isolated valleys. This expedition will teach you what it takes to live and lead outdoors, mastering technical skills like route planning, glacier progression, and river crossings. You’ll cook your own meals, carry everything you need in your expedition pack, and make the mountains your classroom.

The weather is as much a part of the challenge as the terrain. Patagonia’s climate is known for its unpredictability—you might wake up to sunshine and end the day navigating through cold rain or high winds. This variability will test your limits but also teach you resilience, adaptability, and teamwork—lessons that will stay with you long after the course ends.

What You’ll Learn

Throughout the expedition, you’ll develop the knowledge and skills to travel independently in mountainous environments. Some of the core competencies include:

• Mountaineering Techniques: Crampon use, rope systems, knots, and glacier travel.

• Risk Management: Learn to assess hazards and make sound decisions to keep your team on the right track.

• Leadership and Group Dynamics: Alternate between team leader and active follower roles to build collaboration and trust.

• Cultural Competence: Use Spanish for all communication, learning to work effectively with people from different backgrounds.

• Leave No Trace Principles: Practice environmental responsibility with “No Deje Rastro,” the Spanish adaptation of Leave No Trace.

Course Structure

Pre-Course Preparation: Travel to Coyhaique, Chile, where the journey begins.

Day 1: Meet instructors, review gear, and finalize plans at the NOLS Patagonia Campus.

Days 2–13: Embark on the expedition. Each day will include mountain travel, technical skills training, and leadership development. Depending on weather and conditions, you’ll also have the chance to summit peaks and explore off-trail routes.

Day 14: Return to the NOLS campus for a hot shower, a final course debrief, and course graduation in Coyhaique.

Our instructors will guide you through these challenges, helping you discover your inner resilience and develop the ability to stay calm and focused under pressure.
