The Wind River Mountains are one of North America's hidden gems—remote, rugged, and beautiful. On this course, you’ll journey through some of the most stunning and challenging landscapes in the Rockies. You’ll travel through glacial valleys, dense forests, and open alpine terrain while navigating pristine alpine lakes and towering peaks. This diverse environment offers breathtaking views and real-world challenges that will test your wilderness skills and decision-making abilities.
Each day, you’ll adapt to changing conditions, learning to thrive in unpredictable weather, including snowstorms, rain, and high winds. The Wind Rivers are also home to a variety of wildlife, including black and grizzly bears, elk, and mountain goats, and you'll learn the critical skills necessary for traveling safely in bear country.

Days 1–5: Introduction to Wilderness Skills & Team Building
Meet your instructors and fellow participants, review essential wilderness gear, and prepare for the journey ahead.
Begin foundational skill development, including camp setup, cooking, navigation, and Leave No Trace principles.
Days 6–20: Expedition Travel & Leadership Practice
Start your expedition through the Wind River Wilderness. Traverse rugged terrain, including glacial valleys and alpine zones.
Focus on leadership development, with hands-on opportunities to practice leading group travel, making decisions, and solving problems as a team.
Days 21–30: Independent Travel & Reflection
As your skills and confidence grow, take on more responsibility through student-led expeditions.
Continue refining your leadership abilities while exploring the wilderness and developing a deeper understanding of self and group dynamics.
Return to the NOLS base camp for a final course debrief and graduation.
The Wind River Wilderness will test you in every way—physically, mentally, and emotionally. Some of the challenges you might encounter include:
Weather Extremes: The weather in the Wind Rivers is unpredictable, with snow, rain, and high winds common even in summer months. You’ll learn to adapt quickly and develop the resilience to handle sudden weather shifts.
Physical Endurance: You’ll be hiking for 6–8 hours a day with a heavy backpack across rugged terrain, testing your strength, endurance, and mental toughness.
