You can earn college credit through the University of Utah, Western Colorado University or even through your own school for the leadership, environmental studies, risk management, and outdoor skills learned at NOLS.
Choose the type of NOLS course or event you'll be attending from the list to get started.
Check to see if your school already has a relationship with NOLS via direct credits or University of Utah credits.
If your school doesn’t already have a relationship with NOLS, schedule a time to talk to an academic advisor at your college. Be sure to bring a University of Utah course list and your NOLS course description. In your meeting, ask about transferring credit from University of Utah or Western Colorado University. Be aware that if you're participating with AmeriCorps or want to pay with a 529 College Savings Plan you must get credit through Western. You can also ask if you're eligible to receive direct credit from your institution. If your advisor wants to establish a relationship with NOLS, have them reach out to the NOLS University Relations Coordinator at registrar@nols.edu, to start a conversation.
Once you know what type of credit that your college will accept, follow the steps below. If you are planning on transferring credits to your school, be sure to ask how the credits will transfer, and what kind of credits your school will count them as.
If your course starts before April 1, 2025, cost per credit hour earned is $106. If you course starts on or after April 1, 2025, cost per credit hour is $160.
Please note that this is due at least 10 days prior to your course start date. The optional college credit fees are in addition to the course tuition. Registration is not possible after your course has started.
Graduate-level courses are all two credits only (even when the equivalent undergraduate course is offered for 3 or more credits).
Apply for your course through the NOLS website. Choose University of Utah in the list of institutions in the “Academic Credit” section of the dashboard. Choose the credits you wish to receive and pay for them at least 10 days prior to the start of your course. Some courses are eligible for graduate credit. For more detail refer to the University of Utah Credit Information Document.
Build your interests into your course goals! Talk with your instructors about any particular skills or knowledge you feel you’ll need to learn and demonstrate to get the most out of your academic credit.
