Join NOLS on our newest foray into Croatia's incredible backcountry! While NOLS has been operating in Croatia for many years, 2023 is our inaugural hiking trip and we are excited to introduce our Alumni to the amazing limestone mountains of the Velebit range.
This trip utilizes Croatia's relatively unknown backcountry hut system to extensively explore many miles of 3 different National Parks while keeping our packs light. The backcountry huts are rustic in nature, but we have arranged vehicle support so bringing creature comforts along is quite easy. With our vehicle shuttle, packs will be kept at day-pack weights for most of the trip but there are 2 hikes that we will carry a bit more as we move further away from roads.
The Velebit Mountains are part of the Dinaric Alps but are rarely visited by outside visitors because of complicated logistics. We work with a long-time local Croatian partner to smooth out these challenges and bring NOLS Alumni into this pristine backcountry that edges right up to the ocean. You will enjoy expansive Beech forests as well as open meadows and open views on this trip as the route moves through a variety of terrain.
