Feel the wind rush through your hair as your boat sails over blue waves. Explore quiet coves and spot fish swimming in colorful reefs. Relax in the evening on a beach under the stars. On this course, you’ll join a group of adults to push your sailing skills and develop your leadership style. The course starts with the basics, making it a good fit for both experienced sailors and those who are new to sailing. You’ll learn to cruise Baja California’s stunning coastline in 22-foot Drascombe Longboats. Skills you’ll learn along the way include navigating hazards, reading the wind, and minimum-impact camping. Excursions onshore will include exploring the area’s desert coastline, finding wildlife in tide pools, and meeting members of fishing communities who make this area their home.
All NOLS students arriving in Baja are met at the airport and transported to the campus by NOLS staff. Let us welcome you to Baja!
Leadership will also be a key focus of this course. You’ll learn leadership by filling in different roles each day and taking on more responsibility as the course progresses. Navigating your boat in challenging weather offers a lesson in decision making. Working through group dynamics will be an opportunity to learn about communication styles. With these challenges, you’ll build your leadership skills through real experiences, experiences that you’ll remember for the rest of your life. So, start an experience today that will prepare you with the skills to keep sailing and leading no matter where you find yourself.
