As part of this NOLS adventure, you will navigate Baja’s rugged coastline aboard a traditional Drascombe Longboat, learning both technical sailing and wilderness skills while connecting with the natural world like never before.

The Baja coast is home to one of the world’s most biodiverse marine ecosystems. As you sail across turquoise waters and observe Pacific gray whales migrating along the coast, you will gain a greater appreciation for conservation, sustainability, and the delicate balance of the natural world. The Sea of Cortez, often called the "aquarium of the world," is home to diverse marine life, from playful sea lions and graceful dolphins to the majestic Pacific gray whales. Over the course of this expedition, you’ll experience the unique beauty of Baja’s remote islands, hidden beaches, and rugged coastal cliffs.
Your journey will take you through some of the most stunning natural environments in the world. You'll spend your days sailing between desert islands, spotting migrating whales, and exploring untouched beaches, while your nights will be spent under the stars in one of the world’s most tranquil and untouched places.
With 22 days of exploration, you'll have the opportunity to master practical sailing skills, learn essential navigation techniques, and gain a deep understanding of the local marine ecosystems. Along the way, you’ll also learn the significance of the region’s cultural heritage and the importance of sustainable interaction with this fragile ecosystem.

This Baja Sailing and Whale Watching course is designed to equip you with a comprehensive set of skills that extend far beyond traditional sailing knowledge. You’ll learn the following:
Sailing Techniques: From basic navigation to handling wind and waves, you’ll gain practical skills in sailing and boat handling using a Drascombe Longboat. You’ll also learn about weather patterns, tides, and chart reading.
Leadership and Decision-Making: Learn how to lead a small crew, make decisions in challenging environments, and handle crises with composure and confidence.
Wildlife Observation & Conservation: Understand the behavior of marine species, especially the Pacific gray whales, and the conservation efforts needed to protect them. You’ll learn how to responsibly interact with wildlife and the environment.
Risk Management: Develop your judgment and critical thinking to assess environmental risks, navigate safely, and make informed decisions while living in a remote, dynamic environment.
Cultural Awareness: Immerse yourself in the culture and traditions of Baja California Sur, learning how to respectfully engage with the local community and contribute to sustainable practices.
Day 1: Arrive in Baja California Sur, meet your instructors, and get settled into the NOLS Baja campus. Review sailing equipment, course goals, and team roles.
Days 2–6: Begin your sailing journey as you learn the fundamentals of navigating coastal waters and develop key sailing skills. You’ll also participate in whale watching excursions and explore nearby islands.
Days 7–13: Continue sailing along the rugged Baja coastline, practicing advanced sailing techniques, navigation, and wilderness skills. In addition to sailing, you’ll have opportunities to observe and document local wildlife, including the Pacific gray whale migration.
Days 14–21: Embark on extended sailing expeditions, taking on leadership roles and managing sailing routes. Build teamwork, decision-making, and risk management skills as you explore remote coastal areas and interact with local communities.
Day 22: Return to the NOLS Baja campus for a course debrief, final group discussion, and graduation ceremony. Reflect on your growth and the skills you’ve acquired over the course.
