Allen started working for NOLS in 1987. Since that time he has worked at almost every location and area of instruction. He has administered NOLS programs in Mexico, Alaska, Teton Valley, and New Zealand. As Field Risk Manager for Polar Field Services, Allen spent four years designing trainings for staff and researchers as well as assessing risk in the U.S. Arctic Science Program. He has worked as a guide and avalanche educator for Exum, American Avalanche Institute, and Yostmark Backcountry Ski Tours. He is the author of four books (the Allen and Mike Really Cool series) on camping and skiing.
